Chillicothe Municipal Utilities General Manager Steve Svec, who moved from Alaska 15 years ago to fill the utilities position in Chillicothe, will be retiring next month. Svec made the announcement during the regular meeting of the Board of Public Works at 7:15 a.m. Thursday at CMU.

Following his announcement, Svec recommended that board members promote Assistant General Manager Jim Gillilan to his position. Svec, however, told the Constitution-Tribune today (Friday) that the position will be advertised.

Svec, 62, said that he and his wife, Audrey, plan to move back to their home state of New York, where three of their four children — two sons and a daughter — currently reside. They also have a daughter who lives in Texas. Svec moved from Sitka, Alaska, to Chillicothe in the fall of 1995. Prior to Alaska, Svec was employed in Plattsburg, N.Y.

In making the recommendation of his successor, Svec said that Gillilan has been employed with CMU for a long time, has worked with Svec on a number of projects, is familiar with regulations and is qualified.
