The city of Chillicothe is benefiting from the Eagle Scout project of Brady Vaughn, left, who is color coding fire hydrants throughout much of Chillicothe’s commercial areas, as well as the downtown business district and areas around schools and churches. Vaughn has already painted more than 80 hydrants and plans to paint around 150 more. Hydrants with green caps indicate hydrants capable of pumping 1,000 gallons or more per minute while hydrants with orange caps can pump between 500 and 1,000 gallons per minute.

The color coding will provide quick visible identification of hydrant capacity and assist in firefighting efforts, according to Vaughn’s father, Andy, who is a lieutenant and paramedic with the Chillicothe Department of Emergency Services. Reference charts placed in the fire trucks will assist firefighters responding to fire calls. The fire department is providing paint for Vaughn’s Eagle Scout project and may continue the project throughout residential areas. Brady Vaughn is the son of Andy and Debbie Vaughn, of Chillicothe. He is part of Boy Scout Troop 121 and is a Life scout working on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
